Differences between "premature ageing" and "anti-ageing".

By Dr. Midori Meshitsuka, Director of the M Regenerative Clinic | ImunoBran Luxembourg

Introduction

Hello everyone. I am Dr. Midori Meshitsuka, Director of the M Regenerative Clinic. In our clinic, we support our patients every day with sincerity, under the motto "From heart to heart" – with the ambition to help them not only overcome illnesses but also live a happy and fulfilling life.

🌿 Our society and longevity

Today's society can sometimes be a source of stress, but the average life expectancy has continued to rise thanks to advances in medicine. Developed countries will sooner or later enter the age of 100 years.

In this context, medicine must not only treat diseases – it must also help people live happier and healthier lives. Healthy life expectancy can be extended by slowing down natural physiological aging. This means we can enjoy a healthy life more positively, rather than remaining in a passive state of mere survival.

Aging affects everyone in the same way, and time can never be reversed. The few things that cannot be bought with money are happiness and health. So, how can we maintain good health as we age? The answer is optimal aging.

🔄 What is the difference between "anti-ageing" and "optimal ageing"?

You have probably heard the term "anti-ageing". What is the difference between anti-ageing and optimal ageing?

The term "anti-ageing" literally means "resisting ageing". Its definition is "the theoretical and practical science of enjoying a long and healthy life", with the aim of remaining beautiful, young, and healthy thanks to the latest scientific advancements.

It is a lovely idea, of course. However, the rate of physiological ageing naturally accelerates with age. As a result, even the most advanced anti-ageing technologies cannot always meet the growing expectations for rejuvenation. These situations sometimes lead to excesses – some Hollywood actresses have tried to maintain their appearance by continuously adding hyaluronic acid, but the result is an artificial face that is hard to identify. This is the result of excessive anti-ageing treatments.

In contrast, the goal of optimal ageing is to age in perfect health. Of course, optimal ageing does not mean staying healthy without using modern scientific technologies at all. Advanced science is very useful, particularly in enabling busy individuals to benefit from well-balanced dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals with few side effects, and less invasive treatments.

My interpretation is that optimal ageing is not a way to rely solely on the power of science, but a method to enjoy life by naturally enhancing our own innate power – through an ideal balance between body and mind.

🌸 How to practice optimal ageing?

The key is to "appreciate the changes that occur around you" and to "respect yourself as you are".

We all age in the same way, day by day. Until around the age of 20, the changes that occur within us are generally positive – we feel our own progression. However, after 20, we sometimes experience reverse changes. We find it difficult to do something that was easy before and we realise that we are actually ageing.

In these circumstances, we should not be discouraged, but rather try to leverage the accumulation of experiences gained over the years. These attitudes encourage us to accept our ageing as "positive changes", and ultimately to live a fulfilling life.

💡 A personal example

I work as a surgeon. As surgeons, we inevitably suffer from vision problems or hand disabilities as we age. These situations can discourage us from continuing to work as surgeons.

However, we can always carry out a safer and more effective operation by reflecting on what has gone well and what could have been improved over the years. Furthermore, we can pass on this knowledge and these skills to younger generations.

If we positively accept our own ageing, we can appreciate our work more and foster compassion and self-esteem. Our musical and dietary tastes change with age, and so do our bodies and minds. We can be happier if we are satisfied with who we are at any moment.

✨ The pillars of optimal ageing

It goes without saying that it is important to :

  • 🥗 Eat a balanced diet – varied and rich in natural nutrients
  • 🏃 Engage in moderate physical activity – 30 minutes a day
  • 🌿 Avoid oxidative stress – limit tobacco and excessive sun exposure
  • 🧘 Find your own way to relax – meditation, nature, creative activities
  • 😴 Get enough sleep – 7-9 hours per night

Moreover, regardless of our age, we can lead a fruitful and fulfilling life by having a sense of purpose and spending precious time with our friends and loved ones.

🧠 The science of relaxation

From the perspective of neuroscience, alpha waves increase when we are relaxed. This state of natural relaxation is associated with overall well-being – a reduction in stress and an improvement in concentration. The goal of active ageing is to enrich our lives by making small changes to our way of thinking, as these efforts help us to remain healthy and happy by strengthening our natural powers of balance.
